features

The bugs have a size of 4.6-5.8 mm. The head and the front part of the pronotum are black and hardly punctured. The antennae are almost completely colored red. Only the base of the first antenna element is black and the fourth antenna element is slightly darkened. There are three small yellow spots on the front edge of the pronotum. The lateral edges of the pronotum are cream-colored and unpunctivated, while the rear part of the pronotum is also cream-colored, but covered with brown dots. The scutellum is black. The cream-colored hemielytres have yellowish longitudinal stripes and longitudinal rows of brown dots. There is also a large black spot at the transition to the membrane. The hemielytres have a cream-colored unpunctured outer hem. A black area runs centrally over the membrane. The femora are black. The anterior femora are also slightly thickened. The tibiae are reddish and have rows of thorns.

Similar species

The following two species occur in southern Europe, but they have a larger black spot on the membrane and differ in terms of the size of X. quadratus :

distribution

Xanthochilus quadratus is the only representative of the genus in Germany. The species occurs with regional gaps throughout Germany. In the north, the occurrence extends to southern Scandinavia, in the south to the Mediterranean and in the east to western Siberia and Central Asia.

Way of life

The species is often found in steppe and sandy areas, especially with vegetation of silver grass ( Corynephorus canescens ). The bugs are believed to be suckling seeds and polyphagous. The bugs move very quickly on the ground. In Central Europe the species evidently forms a generation. The species overwinters as an imago . Eggs are laid in May. The larvae are observed between June and August. The adult bugs of the new generation appear from July.
