Xian (Cangzhou)

The district Xian ( Chinese  獻縣  /  献县 , Pinyin Xiàn Xiàn ), in the (old) French transcription Sienhsien , Sien Hsien , Sien-Hsien or Hien-hien (among others), is a district of the district-free city of Cangzhou in the Hebei province and seat of a vacant Catholic diocese in the People's Republic of China , which belongs to the ecclesiastical province of Beijing . The word for circle ( xian县) is often added after the name of the circle ( xian献) , so that the apparent name Xianxian arises.

The district of Xian has an area of ​​1,191 km² and approx. 570,000 inhabitants (end of 2004). Administratively, it is composed of four large municipalities , 13 municipalities and one nationality municipality. The main town and seat of the county government is Leshou (乐 寿 镇).

history

The place was the seat of the Catholic Mission of the Jesuits (SJ), which also provided all bishops . The missionaries who worked there (e.g. the French Séraphin Couvreur , Léon Wieger ) also made it one of the most famous publishing houses in the West.

In 1856 the Diocese of Xianxian was founded as the Apostolic Vicariate of the Southeastern Zhili ( Chinese  直隸 東南 ), renamed in 1924 to Apostolic Vicariate of Xianxian and raised to the diocese in 1946. The last bishop was Francis Xavier Zhao Zhensheng ( Chinese  趙振 聲  /  赵振 声 ), SJ

Its cathedral in Dazhangzhuang , which bears the Chinese name Dazhangzhuang Yesu shengxinzhujiao zuotang ( Chinese  大 张庄 耶稣 圣 心 主教 座 堂  - "Sacred Heart of Jesus Bishop Church of Dazhangzhuang") is famous .

Monuments

The Dan Bridge (Dan qiao 单 桥) and the Han Tombs of Xian County (Xian xian Han muqun 献县 汉墓 群) are on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China .
