history
There is evidence of an archbishopric in Beijing as early as 1307 (see Yuan Dynasty ). On April 10, 1690, a diocese was again established in Beijing with the Bull Romani Pontificis by Alexander VIII from the Apostolic Vicariate Nanking , but changed his name on May 30, 1856 to the Apostolic Vicariate of North Chi-Li and on December 3, 1924 before it was elevated to an archbishopric on April 11, 1946 under the name Beijing . In 1949 the archbishopric had 215,915 Catholics. It was a mission area of the Vincentines , who also provided the Apostolic Vicars until 1946.
