The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nanking ( Nanjing ) ( lat. : Archidioecesis Nanchinensis ) is in the People's Republic of China Located diocese of the Roman Catholic Church .

The forerunner of today's Archdiocese of Nanking is the Apostolic Vicariate of Nanking, founded in 1659 from the Diocese of Macau . With the promotion to the diocese on April 10, 1690, it gave up part of its territory to establish the diocese of Beijing .

Under Pope Pius IX. it was demoted to the Apostolic Vicariate of Kiangnan on January 21, 1856 . Under Pope Benedict XV. In 1921 it was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate Kiangsu. On May 1, 1922, the Vicariate Apostolic Nanking was founded. By Pope Pius XII. the Vicariate was raised to the Archdiocese of Nanking on April 11, 1946.

The Suffragan Diocese of Haimen , Diocese of Shanghai , Diocese of Suzhou and Diocese of Xuzhou are assigned to the Archdiocese .

Bishops

Due to the political situation, the archbishopric could no longer be occupied after the death of Paul Yü Pin in 1978, the only archbishop recognized by the Roman Catholic Church .
