Xiphosurus is a genus of medium-sized lizards from the group of iguanas thatoccursin the Greater Antilles . The generic name is derived from the Greek and refers to the characteristic back crest that extends to the tail ("xiphos" = sword + "oura" = tail).

Xiphosurus species are medium-sized lizards, usually of a brownish, greyish or green color.

The monophyly of the genus is supported by 104 molecular biological apomorphies .

The morphological properties of the genus include the parietal eye in the parietal bone or in the bone seam between the parietal bone and frontal bone , the arrow-shaped interclavicle, a bone that connects the actual clavicle with the breastbone (sternum), 3 or 4 lumbar vertebrae and 6 to 8 caudal vertebrae in front the first vertebra capable of autotomy .
