Yamaguchi Falcão Florentino (born December 24, 1987 in São Mateus, Espírito Santo ) is a Brazilian boxer . Falcão was a silver medalist in the Pan American Championships in 2008 and 2010, a bronze medalist in 2009, a silver medalist in the 2011 Pan American Games and a bronze medalist in the 2012 Olympic Games .

Falcão has been fighting for Mexico City in the World Series of Boxing since 2010 . His brother is the boxer Esquiva Falcão .

Amateur career

As a junior (U19), Falcão won the silver medal at the 2006 Pan American Junior Championships.

In 2008 Falcão took part in the middleweight division (-75 kg) in the American Olympic qualification tournaments in Port of Spain and Guatemala City , but was unsuccessful because he won against Emilio Correa , Cuba (26:10) and Shawn Estrada , USA (12 : 7), failed. In the same year he also started at his first international men's championships, the Pan-American Championships, and won the silver medal, again losing to Emilio Correa in the final (17: 2). In 2008 Falcão was also the first Brazilian middleweight champion.

At the Pan American Championships in 2009 Falcão lost in the semi-finals against Alex Theran, Colombia (16: 6), and thus won the bronze medal. In the same year he also started at the World Championships for the first time , but came after victories over Israel Duffus, Panama (18: 2), and Ronald Gavril, Romania (18:10), and a defeat against the eventual world champion Abbos Atoyev , Uzbekistan (8 : 3), not beyond the round of 16.

In 2010 Falcão won the bronze medal at the South American Games and the silver medal at the Pan American Championships. At the end of the year, Falcao starts at the Brazilian championships in the light heavyweight division for the first time and won the championship title.

At the 2011 World Championships , Falcão failed after victories over Amine Azzouzi, Morocco (17: 5), and Carlos Gongora, Ecuador (25:18), as in 2009 in the second round, this time against the eventual bronze medalist Elshod Rasulov , Uzbekistan (17:12) . On the other hand, the Pan American Games 2011 went better for him , where he reached the final after winning the quarter-finals over Felix Manuel Valera, Dominican Republic (RSC 1st) and in the semifinals over Armando Pina, Mexico (27:11) against the Cuban Julio César La Cruz lost (22:12).

In order to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in spite of the poor result at the 2011 World Championships , Falcão took part in the American Olympic qualification tournament in Rio de Janeiro and came in second, where he beat Marcus Browne , USA (14: 6 ), lost. Falcão celebrated his greatest success so far at the Olympic Games: After a controversial win over Sumit Sangwan , India (15:14), an extremely narrow victory in the second round of the Asian Championships Meng Fanlong , China (+17: 17), and one Quarter-final victory over Julio César La Cruz , Cuba (18:15), he reached the semi-finals, in which he was eliminated against Yegor Mechonzew , Russia (23:11) and thus won the bronze medal.

Professional career

In October 2013, he signed a professional contract with the US promoter Golden Boy Promotions . In January 2014 he made his professional debut against the undefeated Argentine Martín Fidel Ríos (10-0). Because of looking up after the round gong, both boxers were disqualified after the second round and the fight was therefore not counted. He won his second fight in April 2014 on points against Fernando Najera.
