Yegor Leonidowitsch Mechonzew ( Russian Егор Леонидович Мехонцев , scientific transliteration Egor Leonidovič Mechoncev ; born November 14, 1984 in Asbestos , Sverdlovsk Oblast, Soviet Union ) is a Russian boxer . In 2012 he was Olympic light heavyweight champion, 2009 amateur world champion and 2008 and 2010 European heavyweight champion.

Amateur career

Mechonzew boxes as a southpaw and has played over 300 fights as an amateur. In 2000 he was Russian cadet champion in light welterweight, and in 2002 Russian junior middleweight champion. At the Junior European Championships in Warsaw in 2003 , he won the gold medal in the middleweight division, defeating, among others, Ismajil Sillach and Petrişor Gănănău .

He then boxed in the light heavyweight division for adults. At the national championships he was runner-up in 2004 and 2005 and won bronze in 2006 and 2007. At the 2005 World Championships in Mianyang , he defeated John Dovi and István Szűcs before retiring in the quarterfinals against Oʻtkirbek Haydarov .

In 2008 he competed in the heavyweight division for the first time and was instant Russian champion. He was then qualified for the 2008 European Championships in Liverpool , where he also won the heavyweight gold medal after defeating Colak Ananikyan in the final. In the semifinals he had again beaten Petrişor Gănănău. In 2009 he also won the heavyweight gold medal at the World Championships in Milan , beating Stefan Köber , Clemente Russo , Bahram Muzaffer , Oleksandr Ussyk and Osmay Acosta , among others .

At the European Championships in Moscow in 2010 , he again won the gold medal in the heavyweight division. He defeated Stefan Köber again, as well as Constantin Bejenaru , Denys Pojazyka and Terwel Pulew . In the same year he was also the first Russian light heavyweight champion, where he also wins against Yevgeny Tishchenko and Nikita Ivanov . In 2011 he repeated the national title win in the light heavyweight division by another final victory against Ivanov.

Ivanov then started at the 2011 European Championships , while Mechonzew started at the 2011 World Championships in Baku . This time he managed to start in the light heavyweight division, including victories against Marcus Browne and Oleksandr Hwosdyk , the entry into the semifinals, where he was just defeated by Julio César La Cruz and was eliminated with a bronze medal. However, with this success he qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and started again in the light heavyweight division. With victories against Damien Hooper , Elshod Rasulov and Yamaguchi Falcão , he was the only Russian boxer to reach the final, defeating Ädilbek Nijasymbetow and winning the Olympic gold medal.

Professional career

In November 2013 he signed a professional contract with the US promoter Top Rank , his manager is Vadim Kornilov. He is trained by Freddie Roach and Marvin Somodio.

He made his professional debut on December 7, 2013.
