Yass (music)

Yass was a music genre and a cultural movement in Poland in the 1990s. It is considered to be one of the most important cultural phenomena of post- communist Poland. The activity of the Yass scene was concentrated in the cities of Bydgoszcz and Gdańsk , but musicians from many other parts of Poland have been and still are under its direct or indirect influence. Over time, the Bydgoszcz Club Mózg ( dt. Brain ) developed into the center of the Yass scene.

The Yass emerged as a strong distinction from the Polish jazz scene of that time and was not accepted by it for a long time (although there were individual musicians who recognized the “Yasser”, such as Tomasz Stańko or Jan “Ptaszyn” Wróblewski ).

Ryszard "Tymon" Tymański , leader of numerous subculture projects, including the "flagship" of Yass - the band Miłość, is considered to be the author of the term Yass . The Yass music combined elements of jazz (especially free jazz ), the modern improvised music , the rock , the punk and folk .

The first Yass albums are Tańce bydgoskie by the band Trytony and Miłość von Miłość , released in 1992 .

A characteristic feature of the Yass movement was the large number of often short-lived projects. Some of them were founded and named ad hoc only for a live performance . The most important groups in the genre were: Miłość , (Maestro) Trytony, Łoskot, Mazzoll & Arhythmic Perfection.
