Surname
There are two competing theories as to the origin of the name 'Yass'. A member of Hume's expedition is said to have climbed a tree to get an overview of the land, and when asked if it was good grazing land, he replied "Yass" (yes). Another claim says that the name was derived from the Aboriginal expression 'Yharr' - apparently a local tribe expression for the river. The German translation is "flowing water".
