Yassin (born January 29, 1985 in Darmstadt ; actually Yassin Taibi ) is a German rapper . He gained fame especially together with Audio88 as a duo and released his first solo album Ypsilon in 2019 .

Life

Yassin was born in 1985 in the Alice Hospital Darmstadt and grew up as the son of an Algerian and a German. He attended the Goethe and Justus Liebig Schools in Darmstadt. After graduating from high school, he studied philosophy at the TU Darmstadt , but broke off later. In 2007 he moved to Berlin and started his career as a musician.

His parents tried to inspire him for music from a very early age. But the spark only jumped over in the 1990s hip-hop boom when he discovered the Fugees and later the Rödelheim Hartreim project . Around 1999 he got a record player and a mixer. Musically, he bought himself in Thomas Hammann's hip-hop shop Pentagon.

A first tape was released in 2003. He then took part in the cassette sampler Stadtgeflüster , where he helped with the mastering . Then he got to know the Darmstadt scene and became part of the independent label Abgrund Records.

In Berlin he got to know Audio88. The two began making music together and so Yassin then worked closely with artists such as Job , Morlockk Dilemma , Dexter and Torky Tork . Outside of the fruitful collaboration with Audio88, Yassin was barely noticed. In 2012 he released the tape `` Altlasten '' with solo material and in 2014 a collaboration album via Bandcamp with his old friend Soda from Darmstadt with mostly dark lyrics and beats. Some solo tracks also followed. Yassin now looks back on an extensive discography of his band Audio88 & Yassin - 10 years have passed since the first release - and yet “YPSILON” is Yassin's solo debut.

Released on January 18, 2019, it reached number 8 in the German album charts. One year later, in 2020, he released the album again as an unplugged version.

Music genre

While Yassin's work with Audio88 is much more cynical and sarcastic, the lyrics on Yassin's solo album are less aggressive and much more personal. Musically, he experiments with various rap and hip-hop styles on the album. However, the rapper himself says that he has not reinvented himself with this project, but has remained true to his melancholy personal way of making music, even if many of these songs have only now seen the light of day. For the first time, "YPSILON" features clearly biographical songs (1985, Junks, Ypsilon) alongside personal and intimate insights (gray hair, velvet gloves, bulletproof glass) and the sensitive and desperate examination of the current political climate as a person with Algerian roots in Germany ( Occident, Germany).
