The island was particularly hard hit by the effects of cyclone Tomas in 2010.

geography

Yacata is located in the northwest of the Lau Islands, 20 km north of Vatu Vara , 40 km west of Kanacea and around 45 km southwest of Naitaba . It is around 60 km to Taveuni beyond the Nanuku Passage in the northwest. The approximately oval island is around 4 km long and up to 2 km wide; their area can be estimated at around 6 km². The hilly island has a prominent elevation with a flattened peak in the center. In the east of the island, on the inner lagoon , is Yacata Village, the only settlement on the island. A few hundred meters east of Yacata is the smaller island of Kaibu , on which there is an airfield ( ICAO code : NFKB) with an unpaved runway. Yacata and Kaibu are almost completely surrounded by a fringing reef .
