Vatu Vara , also known as Hat Island because of its appearance , is an uninhabited island of volcanic origin in the north of the Lau Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean . Politically, it belongs to the Eastern Division of the island state of Fiji . The island is privately owned and was for sale for US $ 75 million, which earned it the title of "the most expensive private island in the world".

geography

Vatu Vara is the westernmost island of the Northern Lau Group and is located 20 km south of Yacata , 32 km west of Mago and 45 km northwest of Cicia . The island, made up of coral limestone , measures about 2.4 by 2.1 km (with the surrounding reef 3.6 by 2.5 km) and rises steeply to a height of 314 m from the Koro Sea .
