Yehuda Avner

Yehuda Avner (* 1928 in Manchester , England ; † March 24, 2015 in Jerusalem ) was an Israeli diplomat.

Avner was born in Manchester in 1928. In 1947 he emigrated to the British mandate of Palestine . There he became one of the founding members of Kibbutz Lavi in Galilee . He joined the Israeli Foreign Service in the late 1950s. During his diplomatic career Avner was, among other things, consul in New York City , from 1983 to 1988 ambassador to the United Kingdom , with simultaneous accreditation to Ireland , and from 1992 to 1995 ambassador to Australia .

In 1995 the Yehuda Avner Chair for Religious and Political Studies was established at Bar Ilan University . Avner has also served as a visiting columnist for the Jerusalem Post . He died on March 24, 2015 at the age of 86 at his home in Jerusalem of complications from cancer.
