From 1950 he lived in Hamburg with the Jahnns family and studied at the Hamburg State University of Music . There he took his exams in composition, conducting and piano in 1960. Then he also took an exam in music theory. In 1961 he received a Villa Massimo Rome scholarship . On December 17, 1963, four years after the death of his godfather Hans Henny Jahnn , Trede married his daughter Signe (June 28, 1929– March 18, 2018).

From 1973 to 1995 Trede was a music professor at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen , where he taught theory and composition. In 1970 he received Danish citizenship. Trede was the bearer of the Dannebrog Order .
