Yoshio Ōtomo

Yoshio Ōtomo , also Yoshio Ohtomo , ( Japanese 大 友 義 雄 , Ōtomo Yoshio ; * 1947 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese jazz musician (alto and soprano saxophone), stylistically part of the hardbop tradition.

Ōtomo worked in the Tokyo jazz scene from the early 1970s; The first recordings were made in 1974 with the singer Minami Yasuda ( South ). In the following years he played in the George Kawaguchi Big Band, in the Takashi Mizuhashi Quartet, with Isao Suzuki / Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and Fumio Itabashi . He led the Yoshio Otomo Quartet and with Hidefumi Toki the formation Alto Madness , which also included Kazumi Watanabe , Nobuyoshi Ino and Steve Jackson ( Lover Man , 1975).

After the productions Oh Friends (1976) and Moon Ray ( Three Blind Mice , 1977) with Tsuyoshi Yamamoto , Tamio Kawabata and O. "Jess" Kurata, he released the album As a Child in 1978 under his own name , on which Toshiyuki Sekine ( E-piano), Satoshi Kosugi (e-bass) and Akiyoshi Yoshino (drums) participated. In the 1980s he also worked with Toshio Ohsumi and Shinichi Kato . In the field of jazz, he was involved in 16 recording sessions between 1974 and 1993, most recently with Shigeo Maruyama's big band Suikyo Za Orchestra ( Kick Off ).
