description

Yucca coahuilensis grows solitary and has no trunk. The flexible, grass-like, pliable, finely fibrous, green to blue-green leaves are 40 to 80 cm long and 1.5 cm wide.

The branched inflorescence that begins in the leaves protrudes far beyond the leaves and becomes 1.5 to 2.5 meters high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, white to cream-colored flowers are 1.5 to 3 cm long and about 1.5 cm in diameter. The flowering period extends from April to June.

Occurrence and systematics

This species is the southernmost representative (northern Mexico) of the section Chaenocarpa Glaucae series . In contrast, the northernmost representative Yucca glauca ssp. albertana in southern Canada. It is related to the representative of the series Glaucae Yucca arkansana ssp. louisianensis closely related.

Yucca coahuilensis is frost-hardy to minus 18 ° C in Central Europe with protection in the winter months . Specimens can be admired in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The species is rare in collections.

Yucca coahuilensis is distributed in the border area between the USA and Mexico in the states of Texas and Chihuahua in grasslands between " xerophyte bushes " at altitudes up to 300 m. This species often grows together with Yucca treculiana and various types of cacti .

The first description by Eizi Matuda and Ignacio Piña Luján was published in 1980.
