Eizi Matuda ( Japanese 松田 英 二 , Matsuda Eiji ), born April 20, 1894 in Nagasaki ; † February 12, 1978 in Lima ( Peru ), was a Mexican botanist of Japanese descent. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Matuda ".

Life

Matuda was the son of Hanjirō and Ōtsuna Matsuda. He studied at the University of Taipei and was professor of botany from 1914 to 1922 in Taiwan, which was then annexed by Japan . In 1922 he founded his own farm in Escuintla in the Mexican state of Chiapas . In 1932 he founded the Instituto botánico Matuda in Escuintla . From 1951 he was visiting professor and curator at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México . From 1954 to 1959 he was chief botanist at the Instituto de investigación forestal (Forest Science Institute), from 1955 to 1965 then head of the botanical department. In 1953 he received an honorary degree from the Sociedad forestal de México (Mexican Forestry Society) and belonged to a number of scientific societies such as the Sociedad botánica de México (Mexican Botanical Society). In particular, he wrote the monographs Mexican Aroids (1954), Mexican Dioscoreae (1953), Mexican Commelinae (1955), Helechos de Estado de México ("Ferns of the State of México ", 1956) and numerous articles. 1960 Matuda received the honorary doctorate would the University of Tokyo .

Initial descriptions and dedication names

Matuda described a number of new types of flamingo flowers , philodendrons , window leaves , day flowers , etc., which, however, were hardly known beyond their homeland, since these groups of plants (in contrast to orchids and succulents ) are more useful plants than collectors' items. Some of them are also no longer recognized as species .

The plant genera Matudaea Lundell from the witch hazel family (Hamamelidaceae), Eizia Standl. from the family of the redness plants (Rubiaceae), Matudacalamus F.Maek. from the family of grasses (Poaceae), Matudanthus D.R.Hunt from the family of commelinaceae (Commelinaceae) and Matudina R.M.King & H.Rob. from the sunflower family (Asteraceae) are named after him. In addition, a number of plant species were named in honor of Matuda by other botanists, e. B. Aechmea matudae , Mammillaria matudae , Pitcairnia matudae , Thelocactus tulensis ssp. matudae and Tillandsia matudae .
