Yucca whipplei subsp. newberryi (English common name : "San Rafael Mountains Yucca") is a subspecies of the plant species Yucca whipplei in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

The monocarp yucca whipplei subsp. newberryi grows individually. The stiff, flexible, finely toothed, blue leaves are 20 to 60 cm long and 2 to 3 cm wide at the base.

The branched inflorescence becomes 2 to 3 meters high. The bell-shaped, cream-colored flowers measure up to 3.5 cm in length and in diameter. The flowering period extends from April to May. They are rare in the collections in Europe.

distribution

Yucca whipplei subsp. newberryi is widespread in the USA in Arizona in exposed places at altitudes up to 1400 m. It grows endemically there , associated with various types of cacti .

Systematics

The name was chosen in honor of the discoverer Newberry. The description by Fritz Hochstätter under the name Yucca whipplei subsp. newberryi was released in 2000.

Synonyms are Yucca newberryi McKelvey (1947) and Hesperoyucca newberryi Clary (2001).
