Yunus Nadi Abalıoğlu

Yunus Nadi Abalıoğlu (* 1879 in Fethiye , † June 28, 1945 in Geneva ) was a Turkish journalist. He was the founder of the Cumhuriyet newspaper .

His father was Abalızade Halil Efendi. He first went to school in Fethiye. Then he visited the Suleymaniye Medrese in Rhodes. After the medrese he went to Istanbul and attended the Galatasaray High School and the Law Faculty of Darülfünun Istanbul . At the age of 20 he started writing articles for the Malumat newspaper. After a year he was arrested as a member of an illegal organization against the regime of Abdülhamid II , sentenced to three years in prison and taken to the fortress of Mytilene . After his release he went back to Istanbul and wrote for newspapers such as Tasviri Efkar and İkdam . In 1910 he became the chief editor of Rumeli newspaper , published in Thessaloniki by the Committee for Unity and Progress . In 1912 he was a member of the Aydın Province in the Ottoman Parliament for five months .

After the First World War he founded the newspaper Yeni Gün and supported the Turkish Liberation War . His newspaper was banned by the occupying powers. He fled to Ankara . Together with Halide Edip Adıvar he founded Anadolu Ajansı on April 6, 1920 . In 1920 he took part in the first Grand National Assembly of Turkey as a member of Muğla . He was one of the founders of the Communist Party , which was founded on the orders of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk with the aim of gaining Soviet sympathy and support.

After the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey, he founded the Cumhuriyet newspaper in Istanbul in 1924. He actively supported the Kemalist reform policy. During the Second World War he wrote daily commentaries on the events of the war.

After his death, a literary prize was donated in his name.
