Yuval Amihai

Yuval Amihai (born May 18, 1981 in Beer Sheva , Israel ) is an Israeli jazz musician ( guitar , composition ).

Live and act

Amihai started playing the piano at the age of eight and switched to electric guitar five years later. Soon he discovered his passion for improvisation and jazz. During his school days he regularly went to Tel Aviv to study with Israel's leading musicians and to take part in workshops and master classes. At 16 he began performing professionally with jazz bands across the country; he also performed his own music in several projects. At the age of 19 he wrote a composition for the string quartet in his hometown and the oud and violin virtuoso Yair Dalal . Michael Wolpe performed his compositions in concert halls all over Israel. He studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and the Rimon Jazz School in Tel Aviv.

Amihai moved to Paris in 2005. The following year he studied at the jazz department of the Paris Conservatory, where he graduated two years later. From 2008 he led his Yuval Amihai Ensemble as a quintet. He and his band performed regularly in Parisian jazz clubs such as Sunset / Sunside, Baiser Salé and Duc des Lombards as well as at festivals in France and Europe.

In 2012 Amihai released his first album with this quintet, which mainly contained his compositions. After publication, he received a composition grant from the French copyright organization SACEM . In the next few years he released two more albums as a band leader, some in trio format (with Damien Varaillon and Gautier Garrigue ) and with a stronger focus on classical jazz standards ; Most recently I Ain't Got Nothin 'But the Blues was released by Fresh Sound New Talent in 2018 .

In 2018 Amihai moved to New York City, where he soon appeared with his new quartet (with David Kikoski , Eric Wheeler and Anwar Marshall) at the Mezzrow Jazz Club , Zinc Bar , Café Bohemia and other clubs.

Prizes and awards

Amihai has won numerous prizes with his ensemble, including 1st prize at the Saint-Germain jazz festival competition in Paris (2008), the Grand Prix and 1st composition prize at the 2009 La Défense national jazz competition and 3rd prize at the international jazz competition by Hoeilaart.
