history

The hammer mill or a comparable system in the Altbachtal near Züsch was first mentioned in 1222. Around 1300 there was also a forge and a stamp mill .

The hammer mill was built in 1697. But it was not until 1806 that the work boomed due to the continental barrier under Napoleon. In 1869, however, the plant was closed as one of the last hammer mills in the Hochwald .

When the rear county of Sponheim was divided, Züsch fell to the Margraviate of Baden-Durlach in 1776 . Under the leadership of the margraves, the iron industry in the Hochwald was revived in 1736. Thus, the commissioned Vogt Friedrich Christoph the Trier Hüttemeister Leopold Choisy at the old Hammerplatz below the melting to build a new hammer. In 1771 a mill was put into operation on the Johann Adam Wetzlar site. The wood required for the blast furnaces was burned by local charcoal burners and made available as charcoal.

The blast furnace in the ironworks, which was commissioned in 1789, was in operation until 1804/05. The staff consisted of eight workers, of whom only half were left in 1821. In 1817, Züsch and the hammer mill finally fell. Prussia ( Rhine Province ) wrought iron was produced at the hammer. Bar, rod, nail and ripening irons were produced here around 1830. Between 1832 and 1836 the hammer mill fell to the Gottbill company from Trier, after which it was sold to Richard Gottbill for 12,000 thaler . For just under 30 years the facility was ultimately classified as unprofitable and shut down, after which the buildings fell into disrepair.

An inspection and mapping of the old ironworks carried out in 1973 were the prerequisites for the uncovering and securing carried out ten years later as part of job creation measures. In 1982 and 1983 the foundations of former hammer systems were exposed, measured and partially preserved.

Today the Züscher Hammer Association takes care of the system. Every first Sunday of the month there are also demonstrations of the mechanics of the movement.
