Zahida Parveen Manzoor, Baroness Manzoor CBE (born Ahmed , born May 25, 1958 in Rawalpindi , Pakistan) is a British businesswoman and politician .

She was born in Rawalpindi , Pakistan as the daughter of Nazir Ahmed (military veteran and businessman) and his wife Mahroof Ahmed, who immigrated to England when she was four years old. She first became a nurse before completing her studies from 1983 at the University of Leeds and in 1989 with an MA from the University of Bradford . She became a lecturer before continuing her career in the National Health Service .

Career

Manzoor served as chair of the Bradford Health Authority from 1992 to 1997 before being named one of eight regional chairs of the National Health Service (NHS) from 1997 to 2001 . In that capacity she was responsible for the North East England , North West England and Yorkshire regions , with a budget of £ 3.5 billion and a population of 6.3 million people. At the same time she was a member of the Policy Board , the governing body of the NHS .

She has been a member of the British Commission for Racial Equality since 1993 and was its deputy chairwoman (1993 to 1995). She has been working as an independent expert for the Foreign Office since 1999 . From 1997 to 2003 she served as a trustee on the board of directors of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). From 1996 to 2003 she was co-founder and director of Intellisys Limited , a consulting firm in the field of information technology . In 1992 she was appointed to the Board of Directors of Bradford University by the Privy Council . 1991-1993 she was a member of the Board of Governors of Sheffield Hallam University . From 1990 to 1996 she was Regional Director of the Common Purpose Charitable Trust . From 2003 to 2011 she served as Legal Services Ombudsman ( arbitrator ) in the public health service for England and Wales responsible for appeals in healthcare and directly responsible to Parliament. During this time it was able to bring about significant improvements in the legal status of the professional associations. She also initiated an investigation into the handling of personal injuries to miners, which led to substantial compensation in favor of this professional group. In 2004 she was appointed Commissioner for England and Wales by Lord Chancellor to act as head of an auditor of government decisions and their oversight in the health service. To this end, this body has been given considerable powers in order to be able to guarantee an improvement in the complaints or contradictions. This served u. a. Fines of up to £ 1 million. During her term of office (until April 2010) she was able to implement numerous improvements. On September 6, 2013, she was raised as a life peer with the title Baroness Manzoor , of Knightsbridge in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea , and has been a member of the House of Lords since then. It was introduced into parliament on October 10, 2013.

She has been married to Madassar Manzoor since 1984 and has two daughters.
