Zaleya is a genus of plants fromthe afternoon flower family (Aizoaceae). The origin of the botanical name of the genus is unclear.

description

The species of the genus Zaleya are annual to perennial plants . Their often rough internodes are usually longer than the opposite, stalked leaves . The blade is obovate to lanceolate. The leaves of a pair of leaves are unequal in size. The epidermis is finely papillary . Some species have hair .

The flowers are in more or less dense, often crowded cymes . Very rarely they are solitary, sessile or with a short stalk. Bracts and bracts are awl-shaped and very narrow. The perigone is fused on half. There are 5 to 15 stamens .

The dome-shaped, two-sided fruits break into two halves, each containing two wrinkled black seeds lying on top of each other .

Systematics and distribution

The genus Zaleya is distributed in tropical and subtropical areas in a belt of 30 degrees on both sides of the equator.

The first description was made in 1768 by Nicolaas Laurens Burman . According to Heidrun Hartmann (* 1942) the genus Zaleya includes the following species:

  • Zaleya camillei (Cordem.) HEK Hartmann
  • Zaleya decandra (L.) Burm.f. : It is native to India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Indonesia and East Timor.
  • Zaleya galericulata (Melville) H. Eichler : It occurs in Australia. With the subspecies:
    • Zaleya galericulata subsp. galericulata
    • Zaleya galericulata subsp. australis (Melville) SWLJacobs
  • Zaleya govindia (Buch.-Ham. Ex G.Don) NCNair
  • Zaleya pentandra (L.) C. Jeffrey : It is widespread in Africa, the Sinai Peninsula, the Arabian Peninsula, Israel, Madagascar and Réunion.
  • Zaleya redimita (Melville) HEK Hartmann
  • Zaleya sennii (Chiov.) C. Jeffrey
