Zalmay Rassoul (also Zalmai ; ( Pashtun or Persian زلمی رسول, DMG Zalmay Rasūl ); * 1944 in Kabul ) is an Afghan politician. He was Foreign Minister in Hamid Karzai's cabinet from January 2010 to October 2013 .

Rassoul was born in Kabul as the son of Abdu'l Qayyum Khan Sarkar and his wife Farukh Begum, the daughter of the Emir Habibullah Khan . Amanullah Khan , King of Afghanistan 1909–1929, was his maternal uncle. He attended the French-speaking Lycée Esteqlal in Kabul and then studied medicine at the University of Paris, where he graduated in 1973. His mother tongue is Pashto . He is also fluent in Dari , French , English , Italian and, with some deductions, Arabic . He has published over 30 articles in American and European scientific medical journals and is a member of the American Society of Nephrology .

On October 5, 2013, Rassoul resigned as Foreign Minister. He was a candidate for the 2014 presidential election . His vice-presidential candidate was Ahmad Zia Massoud . In the first round of voting he received 11.37% of the vote and came in third place. He supported former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah in the runoff election .
