The Zambezi at Zambezi

Zambezi is a town on the upper reaches of the Zambezi on the M8 highway in the far west of the northwestern province of Zambia, 60 kilometers downstream from Chavuma . It is 1050 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 64,963 inhabitants (2000 census). At Zambezi, a car ferry connects the banks. In Chinyingi a 300-meter pedestrian suspension bridge spans across the stream.

politics

Two ethnic groups live in this district , the Lunda and the Luvale . The Luvale are the significantly larger ethnic group, whose settlement area extends far into Angola . This is probably one of the reasons why the civil war in Angola led to repeated UNITA attacks in this area and in 1998 to over 100 deaths in Zambezi. UNITA suspected illegal diamond seekers from the fields of Lunda Norte , from which UNITA made several hundred million US dollars annually. This problem has moved to Chavuma since 2004.

economy

The district is dominated by agriculture, cattle breeding dominates. Grain is grown in subsistence . 43 kilometers north of Zambezi are three million tons of limestone and one million tons of good quality marble .

On October 23, 2006, the BBC reported that oil and gas had been discovered for the first time in Zambia. President Mwanawasa wants to win over foreign oil companies for detailed investigations of the areas in the districts of Chavuma and Zambezi. In the meantime, this information has been confirmed.

Infrastructure

The road to Chavuma was paved in 2013, and the road to Solwezi is also an excellent asphalt road that leads through the Cryptosepalum forests. Zambezi has a 1,200 meter long unpaved airstrip, two military camps, a mission hospital, an elementary school, shops and a gas station.

tourism

At Zambezi are the "palaces" of the chiefs of the Luanda and Luvale. At the end of August, seven kilometers from Zambezi, in front of the Luvale Palace, the Likumbi Lya Mize ceremony, a traditional festival, takes place.
