Zaqatala ( Russian Закаталы / Sakataly ) is a city in Azerbaijan . It is the capital of the Zaqatala district . The city had around 21,100 inhabitants in 2014 and is located on the Tala River.
Culture
The inner city from the 19th century is still partially preserved. There are the remains of a fortress that was built by Russia in the 1830s and, after a failed revolution in 1905, served as a prison for the former occupation of the Potemkin . There is also an abandoned church and a historical museum in the city. Zaqatala has had town charter since 1967.

The city is connected to the network of the Azerbaijan Railway , the line from Yevlax to Balakən . The M5 highway runs through the city from Yevlax via Mingəçevir to the Georgian border. There is also a small runway.
