The Zayandeh or Zayandeh Rud ( Persian زاینده‌رود; Zayandeh 'life-giving' and Rud 'river') is a river that flows through Isfahan in Iran .

The river has its source in the Zāgros Mountains in the province of Tschahār Mahāl and Bachtiyāri and flows into the province of Isfahan , where, after around 400 kilometers, it flows into Lake Gawchuni , a seasonal salt lake and a former marshland in the southeast of Isfahan. The river was the richest in water in central Iran and one of the few that carried water all year round. In the urban area of Isfahan, where it is accompanied by parks on both sides, the river was dammed so that it expanded to several times the width. Since the end of the 2000s, it has dried up for much of the year due to overexploitation of groundwater and surface water and decreasing rainfall.

bridges

Several new and old bridges cross the river. The oldest is the Pol-e Schahrestan from the 5th century AD, the last one to date was added in 2000.
