Zen Arcade is the second studio album by the US alternative / punk band Hüsker Dü . It was released on July 14, 1984 under the SST Records label and is assigned to the post-hardcore genre. It is considered to be one of the groundbreaking works in the hardcore punk and indie rock genres .

The concept album Zen Arcade tells the (dreamed) story of a young man who escapes his drab, violent home and seeks his place in the world. But reality doesn't make him feel like he belongs either, he doesn't find what he had hoped for, instead he is confronted with the army, drugs and an unhappy love.

Music genre

Zen Arcade marks the turning point from traditional punk or hardcore punk to a more melodic and guitar-driven style. It contains many other style elements, such as: B. Jazz , Psychedelic Rock and Folk . The album stands out because the style that can be assigned to the genre Hardcore Punk reaches a climax in terms of speed and volume.

Recording and production

The double album Zen Arcade was recorded within 45 hours. With the exception of two tracks, one take was sufficient for the recording. The recording cost was $ 3,200.

Since the label initially only pressed between 3,500 and 5,000 copies, the album was out of print for months.

Versions

In addition to the standard version as a double LP, the album was also sold on CD and MC.

reception

Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album 33rd out of the top 100 albums of the eighties.

Zen Arcade is often mentioned in the same breath as London Calling by the British rock band The Clash or "[...] a kind of Thrash Quadrophenia ."

Josef Gasteiger judged for laut.de : “The Hüsker boys put on what Nirvana and Co. brought into the mainstream years later. A teaspoon of sugar in a fist in the face. "
