Reviews

“The fog creeps, rain patters, snow falls: Little happens in this documentary, but in a concentrated form. The camera captures images of hypnotic beauty, even if it's just a steaming cup in which the green tea is slowly settling like a disturbing thought. "

“Zen for Nothing” is most impressive when the moving images almost come to a standstill. And you realize that the cinema experience is not so much different than sitting still for two hours in a Zen monastery. "

“You all want to find yourself here. But in community, that's the next paradox of the film. On the one hand, in Penzel's point of view, the apparent advantages of a way of life striving for inner balance are touted. On the other hand, in the next moment, those apparent advantages - emphasized on the narrative side and not devoid of humor in the best scenes - are put up for disposition without judgment.

“Everything appealing and great, if it weren't for this trick: The film follows a novice who joins the monastery community from outside, more precisely from Switzerland. Sabine Timoteo is the character who gives the viewer access and holds the plot together. She is a dancer and actress. As natural and engaging as the Bernese woman is in Zen for Nothing, her appearance remains trapped in a role. Some might admire it for how authentic it comes across. It plays into the hearts of the audience and does everything spot-on. I think that is precisely what is wrong. Zen is raw, Zen goes all out. Two long-term residents tell of this dimension, each speaking their own long text into the camera. Thanks to these confessions, the weights are temporarily shifting away from the tidy atmosphere of a holiday camp. That’s strong fare in this richly visual, multi-layered film. "
