Central fairground

The central fairground in Berlin is an area for holding events outdoors. Almost 60,000 m² of the 87,000 m² site can be used for all kinds of events. The fairground is located in the Berlin district of Wedding ( Mitte district ) on Kurt-Schumacher-Damm immediately east of Tegel Airport and borders the Cité Joffre . In the south, the Hohenzollern Canal limits the area.

history

Due to the urban development in the inner city of Berlin, the traditional places of the Berlin folk festivals and circus events (such as on Jafféstrasse or the Klingelhöfer triangle ) could no longer be used. Therefore, a new location was sought that could be used permanently for folk festivals, fairs, sales markets and fairs, circuses and similar events.

After the Allied protective powers withdrew from Berlin in 1994, the area of the ammunition depot of the French armed forces on Kurt-Schumacher-Damm, south of the Napoleon quarter , remained unused. At that time, the traditional Franco-German folk festival was already taking place on the property opposite. In the zoning plan for Berlin in 1994, the location was specified as a special construction area with a high proportion of greenery and the purpose of being “festival space”. After the ammunition bunker was demolished in 1999, the area was used as an event space from 2000.

Major events take place regularly on the site. These include, for example, the Berliner Volksfestsommer as the direct successor to the Franco-German Volksfest , the color festival “Farbgefühle”, the “90's Supershow” or the “Circus des Horrors”. There is also a parking lot for commuters there all year round.

At the beginning of 2016 it became known that there were plans to build temporary refugee accommodation in container construction on the planning area . The fairground itself and its event operations would not be affected by such a use, since the complete list of MUF and container locations for refugee accommodation presented in 2016 limits the area in question to "the former gravel works on the fairground ", the one east of the fairground directly on Hohenzollern Canal is located.

At the central fairground , all major events planned for the current 2020 financial year had to be canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the corresponding ordinance of the Berlin Senate . From April 23 to July 27, 2020, there was an outpatient corona test facility of the Berlin-Mitte health department. From September 2020, normal business operations are to be resumed to the extent permitted.

The Berlin Senate recently commissioned a feasibility study for the construction of a new, pure football arena for Hertha BSC on the festival site. The plans are currently being assessed by the Senate. However, the continued existence of the fairground as an event area for major events is contractually secured by a corresponding development plan and until 2028.
