The Center for Higher Education (zhb) in Dortmund is a central scientific institution of the Technical University of Dortmund , founded in 2011 , which researches on the topics of higher education , organization , leadership , further education , university didactics , foreign languages , inclusion and accessibility and offers services in these areas. This connection between different service and research areas is unique in Germany.

Emergence

Until 2011 there were various central scientific units at the TU Dortmund , all with a different focus in the areas of teaching, didactics and further education. On the one hand there was the University Didactic Center, which had a supra-regional training and research program in university didactics. In addition, there were various coaching offers at the University Didactic Center. There was also the Center for Further Education, which had established itself in the economy of the Ruhr area with the development of further education programs for managers and works councils on the one hand, and for teachers and school principals on the other. There was also the Dortmund Center for Disability and Studies, which operated with nationwide unique concepts regarding the inclusion of primarily hearing and visually impaired students and lecturers. The Center for Foreign Languages also carried out foreign language training at the TU Dortmund. In 2011, the rectorate of TU Dortmund University made the decision to merge these central scientific institutions . The four independent centers have been combined to form the Center for Higher Education (zhb). With regard to the name, the decision was made to use a special spelling of the word HochschulBildung. The name is intended to express that the zhb deals with the topics of university didactics, university research, including university and college as an organization, as well as further training , foreign language training and educational research in research and services .

There were two chairs in the Center for Continuing Education and one in the Center for University Didactics, all of which were incorporated into the zhb. This close cooperation between research, teaching and service at the zhb is intended to ensure that research results are passed on at first hand and that it is not an institution similar to an adult education center . Since the merger made it possible to work on common topics in the area of university organization and further training, there were content- related synergy effects. The sign language interpretation was included in the foreign language program and thus paved the way for the development of an inclusive university didactics. In addition, they worked together on further training didactics as well as research proposals on management style in universities and other publication projects.

Within the structure of the zhb, a distinction is made between service and research areas , in which separate departments with corresponding management positions have been created for the services that report directly to the director. The three chairs are closely linked to the service areas in terms of organization and content. The board of zhb consists of three professors , an elected Mittelbau representatives and each one / one elected representatives of non-scientists and student assistants . In addition, the four division heads are non- voting members of the board.

Directory

The board of directors of the zhb is filled with one of the three professors. The first director since 2011 is Uwe Wilkesmann . In addition, there has been a central assistant since 2013 who supports the director with regard to financial management. Since 2018, a deputy for the director has also been elected.
