The Center for Molecular Neurobiology Hamburg (ZMNH) is a neuroscientific research institution founded in 1987 in the Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE).

The ZMNH comprises five institutes, eight independent research groups, three guest groups, an emeritus group and five scientific service facilities (as of 2020). Approx. 190 employees work in the center.

Fundamental decisions are made by the college, in which the institute directors, the managing director and one representative each of the research group leaders and scientists are represented. It elects the director of the center from among the institute directors.

The scientific advisory board advises the UKE on the scientific and strategic orientation of the ZMNH and evaluates its scientific work.

history

From 1986 the ZMNH was implemented on the basis of an agreement between the University of Hamburg, the citizens of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the third-party funder, the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology . The federal government took over the costs of the research groups and the scientific service facilities as part of a 10-year start-up financing. In 1988 the center was able to begin its work with five research groups, initially in interim buildings. The founding phase of the ZMNH and the work of the founding director, Dietmar Richter, ended with the move to a new building in Martinistraße / corner of Falkenried in 1996 .
