Melitta Schachner Camartin (born April 4, 1943 in Brno ) is Emerita and visiting scientist for neurobiology at the Center for Molecular Neurobiology Hamburg at the University of Hamburg .

Melitta Schachner received a Fulbright scholarship in 1962 and went to the University of California, Berkeley , USA. From 1963 to 1968 she studied biochemistry at the University of Tübingen . In 1965 she was a summer student with Max Delbrück at the California Institute of Technology , Pasadena , USA, and in 1966 she was a summer student with François Gros at the Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique, Paris . In 1968 Schachner received her diploma in biochemistry, and in 1970 she was awarded a PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Munich. rer. nat. PhD.

From 1970 on, Schachner was a research fellow at the Sloan Kettering Institute , New York , and at the Department of Neuropathology, Harvard Medical School . In 1972 she received a research grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ).

Teaching

In 1974 Schachner became assistant professor for neuropathology at Harvard Medical School , in 1976 professor for neurobiology at Heidelberg University and from 1988 professor for neurobiology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich , Switzerland. Since 1996 she has been professor of neurobiology at the ZMNH in Hamburg .

Schachner was or is also active as visiting professor (1995–1996) and honorary professor (since 2010) at the University of Hong Kong , as visiting professor at Dalian University, Dalian , China (2004–2005), as New Jersey Professor of Spinal Cord Research at Rutgers University , Piscataway , USA (since 2004) and as a consultant at Shantou University Medical College, China (Li Ka-Shing Foundation) (since 2010).

Melitta Schachner is the daughter of Doris Schachner , Professor of Mineralogy and Honorary Senator of RWTH Aachen University , and Benno Schachner , Professor of Building Construction .
