The Center for Scientific Diving ( English AWI Center for Scientific Diving [AWI-CSD]) of the Alfred Wegener Institute on Helgoland is a diving and training base for research divers . The center is affiliated with the Biological Institute Helgoland of the AWI and is headed by the biologist Philipp Fischer .

The AWI-CSD is the central platform for the approx. 1500 scientific diving missions of the AWI every year. It coordinates and supports the diving operations of the AWI with its infrastructure. These are carried out at the locations in Bremerhaven and Sylt , on the research vessels Polarstern , Heincke , Uthörn , at the AWIPEV station ( Arctic ) and the Dallmann laboratory ( Antarctic ).

In addition to AWI scientists, the center also trains scientists from other scientific institutions and universities.

The Research Diving Center (FTZ) is recognized as a training facility by the Commission for Research Diving Germany (KFT).

AWI diving group

The AWI currently has around 50 trained research divers . The divers work on their own scientific projects as well as on other projects in which they work on behalf of them underwater.

An example of this are the annual diving missions at the AWIPEV station in Ny-Ålesund . A large number of different research projects of the AWI and cooperating institutes are supported. The divers' spectrum of activities ranges from normal sampling to the installation and maintenance of long-term measuring devices to the construction and supervision of seasonal in-situ tests in the area of the Kongsfjord .

Another example is research on the project Margate on Helgoland, an established 2010 from 36 tetrapods existing artificial reef . This underwater experimental field serves to clarify the influence of artificially introduced structures on the marine ecosystem.
