The Heincke is a German research ship . The owner is the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research . The ship is operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research , and the ship is managed by the shipping company Briese Schiffahrt in Leer .

history

The ship, which was put into service in 1990, is used for geophysical and hydrographic research and is designed for trips of up to 30 days and 4000 nautical miles. It was in 1989/90 under the hull number 144 on the the Hegemann group belonging Detlef Hegemann Rolandwerft GmbH & Co. KG in Berne built. The keel of the ship was laid on May 22, 1989 and the launch on April 17, 1990. It was completed in June 1990. The construction costs amounted to around 16 million euros.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . The drive motor is an electric motor from the manufacturer Lloyd Dynamowerke (type: GC 395/103/6) with an output of 1,100  kW , which acts on a fixed propeller. The ship can thus reach a speed of up to 12  knots . It also has a pump jet as a cross -jet control system .

Three diesel generator sets are available for power generation, each driven by MAN engines with a nominal output of 532 kW. The generator sets were installed during a two-month stay in the shipyard at the end of 2014 / beginning of 2015 at MWB Motorenwerke Bremerhaven and replace the old generator sets with KHD - MWM engines (type: TDB-604 L 6, each with 525 kW nominal power). An auxiliary diesel (195 kVA) and an emergency generator (40 kVA) are also available. The MAN engines were equipped with soot particle filters with downstream exhaust gas cleaning.

The ship, which is at sea around 200 days a year, has an operating radius of around 7500 nautical miles and can therefore remain at sea for up to 30 days without interruption. It has four laboratories (wet, dry, thermal and multi-purpose laboratory ) as well as winches , cranes (including a pivoting rear boom ) and echo sounder systems for research purposes.

Others

The Heincke is a sister ship of the research ship Alkor , which is based at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel .

The ship is named after the founding director of the then "Royal Biological Institute Helgoland", Friedrich Heincke (1852–1929), after whom the predecessor of the Heincke , which was built in 1968 and decommissioned in 1990 , was named after Friedrich Heincke . Heincke was director of the BAH from 1891 to 1921.
