Zhongzheng ( Chinese 中正 區 , Pinyin Zhōngzhèng Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Tiong-chèng Khu ) is a district of the northern Taiwanese port city of Keelung .
Location and importance
Zhongzheng is located on the East China Sea . On the west side of the district is the port of Keelung , on the opposite side of which is the Zhongshan district . Zhongzheng borders the Ren'ai and Xinyi districts to the south . The north of the district is the 663 m² Heping Island . In addition, the small islands of Keelung , Pengjia , Mianhua and Huaping belong to Zhongzheng.
The west of the district is characterized by the port facilities. In addition, Zhongzheng is considered the political and cultural center of Keelung. This is where the City Hall, the State Ocean University and several museums are located, the most famous of which is the Museum of Marine Technology . Popular excursion destinations are the Marine Park on Heping Island , which offers a view of Keelung Island , 3.3 km away , Zhongzheng Park on the border with Xinyi and the fishing ports of Bisha and Zhengbin .
history
The area of today's district was originally from the indigenous community of Basay inhabited. In 1626 the Spaniards built a fort called San Salvador on Heping Island , which was the earliest permanent presence of a European power in Taiwan. The fort, later taken over by the Dutch under the name Noord-Holland , has now almost disappeared without a trace. The remains of the Uhrshawan Fort, built in 1840 under the rule of the Qing dynasty , can still be visited . The Chinese settlers, who immigrated mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries, were fishermen; in the 20th century the importance of the fishing ports then fell more and more behind that of the modern industrial and container port of Keelung.
