Location and importance

Nuannuan is located in the southeast of the city of Keelung. In the north and west are the neighboring districts of Xinyi , Ren'ai , Anle and Qidu , in the south and east the district borders on the city of New Taipei . The Keelung River flows through the district . Nuannuan is connected to the Highway 1 and the rail network.

Despite the onset of settlement by Chinese immigrants from Fujian in the 18th century, Nuannuan was sparsely populated for a long time due to its limited suitability for agriculture. Because of its strategic location in northeastern Taiwan, fortifications were built on the hills of Nuannuan in the 19th century, of which only a few traces have survived today.

More recently, Nuannuan is developing into a new residential area on the outskirts of the cities of Keelung and New Taipei and is also a popular destination. More famous attractions include the Nuannuan Suspension Bridge over the Keelung River and glacial pots from the Ice Age . The Xishi Dam in Nuannuan , built between 1923 and 1926 at the time of Japanese colonial rule, is important for the water supply in northern Taiwan .
