Qidu ( Chinese  七堵 區 , Pinyin Qīdǔ Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Chhit-tó͘ Khu ) is a district of the northern Taiwanese port city of Keelung . Its name means about "seventh wall" and is derived from the simple fortifications with which the Chinese settlers, who have lived here since the late 18th century, secured the land they reclaimed against attacks by the indigenous people .

Location and importance

Qidu is located on the western edge of the urban district of Keelung and borders the neighboring districts of Anle and Nuannuan in the east and the city of New Taipei in the west . It is the largest district of Keelung in terms of area (more than 40% of the urban area) and the district with the lowest population density. The landscape in the west and south is green and hilly, here is the most famous natural beauty of Qidu, the Taian waterfall . The Keelung River also flows through the area of the district.

In contrast to the northern districts dominated by the port of Keelung , Qidu was a rather rural district until well into the 20th century, when some companies also settled here. Among other things, the headquarters of Yang Ming , one of the largest transport companies in the world, are located in Qidu .

In recent times, thanks to its charming surroundings, parts of the district have also been developed as a tourist area and some of the city's offices have been relocated here. Qidu is connected to Highway 1 and the Taiwan Railroad Network.
