Zirconyl chloride is an inorganic chemical compound from the group of chlorides , which is normally present as octahydrate .

Extraction and presentation

Zirconyl chloride can be made by hydrolyzing zirconium (IV) chloride or treating zirconium (IV) oxide with hydrochloric acid .

properties

Zirconyl chloride is a non-flammable solid that is easily soluble in water. The octahydrate gives off water of crystallization at 150 ° C , the resulting dihydrate at 210 ° C.

use

Zirconyl chloride is used as a reagent for the detection of fluorine and phosphate ions , as a precipitant for organic colloids , as a staining reagent in thin-layer and paper chromatography . It is also used for textile impregnation in an aqueous medium.
