Cistercian Abbey of Saint-Jacques (Vitry-en-Perthois)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of Saint-Jacques (Vitry-en-Perthois) was 1234-1752 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Vitry-en-Perthois , a municipality in the department of Marne in France .

history

Not far from the Trois-Fontaines monastery , Theobald IV, Count of Champagne, founded the Cistercian monastery of Saint-Jacques on the river Saulx in 1234 near today's Vitry-en-Perthois , which served as a hostel for pilgrims on the Way of St. James . 1747–1751 it came under Abbess Marie-Thérèse de Napier (1720–1762) to the incorporation of the abbey of Saint-Pantaléon (Saint-Dizier), which was dissolved due to overindebtedness . In 1792 the monastery was dissolved by the French Revolution . In Vitry today only a few field names ("Ferme de Saint-Jacques" and others) remind of the former monastery.
