Vitry-en-Perthois is a French commune with 828 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Marne department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Vitry-le-François and the canton of Sermaize-les-Bains (until 2015: canton of Vitry-le-François-Est ). The place is on the banks of the Saulx River .

history

Vitry was burned down by the army of King Louis VII in 1142 and by the army of Emperor Charles V in 1544 . Since then the place has been called "Vitry-le-Brûlé". King Francis I ordered its reconstruction, albeit in a slightly different place, the new place was named Vitry-le-François .
