Vernaison Cistercian Abbey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey Vernaison was from 1171 to 1791, a monastery of Cistercian nuns first in Chateauneuf-sur-Isere , from 1616 in Valence , Drôme , France.

history

On the initiative of the Léoncel monastery , the local nobility founded the Cistercian priory of Commerci (also: Comiers ) in 1171 in Châteauneuf-sur-Isère on the right bank of the Isère . Because of a fire, the nuns moved (after 1222) a few kilometers east (on the left bank of the Isère) to a place called Vernaison (Latin: Verneso or Vernaysium ), which (still part of Châteauneuf) is at Romans-sur-Isère and Bourg- de-Péage adjoins. The old monastery, which was still in secondary use, bore the name Monestier vieux from then on . The Vernaison monastery was elevated to an abbey in 1263 (with the condition not to exceed the number of 30 sisters, with any number of conversations ) and acquired several properties in Romans. In 1616 the nuns moved (as recommended by the Council of Trent ) to the episcopal city of Valence. There it was dissolved by the French Revolution in 1791 . Vernaison is still the name of the corresponding district in Châteauneuf-sur-Isère (with the street names Route de l'Abbaye and Chemin des Dames , which are reminiscent of the monastery). There is no connection to the municipality of Vernaison near Lyon .
