The Znojemský viadukt ( Znojmo Viaduct ) is a railway bridge in the Czech Republic , which carries the route of the former kk priv. Austrian Northwest Railway from Vienna to Mittelgrund (today: Děčín - Prostřední Žleb ) over the Thayatal near Znojmo . The bridge is located at kilometer 99.297 from Vienna. It has been protected as a technical monument since 1988 .
history
With the laying of the foundation stone in April 1869, construction work officially began on the 220-meter-long Znojemský viaduct designed by Johann Emanuel Brik with four openings (around 50 meters - 60 meters - 60 meters - 50 meters) and a height difference of around 48.2 meters between the Normal water level of the Thaya and the upper edge of the threshold.
The masonry work started with the construction of Pillar III on October 29, 1869, which included the construction of three bridge piers and two abutments at the bridge ends, took a total of 19 months and was carried out by the construction company Praschniker, Jochem and Bode .
To build the three slender stone pillars, a quarry was opened in the so-called Wolfsschlucht and a temporary bridge was built. A locomobile - allegedly the first to be used in Znojmo - was used to drive the pillars both for the foundation of the pillars and for lifting the stone blocks onto the pillars by means of a freight elevator . The iron bridge structure was supplied by the iron works of the Benkieser brothers in Pforzheim . The erection and assembly of the supporting structure, which began at the end of April 1871 - a four-part lattice frame construction with an overhead carriageway - took a total of 110 days.
With the help of ten locomotives, a ballast machine and nine ballast wagons, the single-track viaduct was put to the test on October 3, 1871. The route from Stockerau to Znojmo was put into operation on November 1, 1871.
The first plans to replace the historical bridge structure with a contemporary full-walled steel box bridge existed at the ČSD as early as 1966. However, these plans were not carried out. The protection as a cultural monument in 1988, initiated by the Znojmo city administration and advocated by the railway ministry at the time, initially prevented the realization of further new building plans.
In 1990, plans were drawn up to build a new bridge structure with a similar framework construction. However, the structural condition of the structure, which was deteriorating unexpectedly quickly, initially made it necessary to cease freight traffic from February 26, 1992. Cross-border passenger traffic to Retz could be maintained by railcars until the bridge was finally closed on August 12, 1992.
In order to make the viaduct passable again quickly, the supporting structure was rebuilt by the Železniční stavitelství Brno (Brno Railway Construction) together with the Czechoslovak Army's railway pioneers using the military bridge construction device ŽM16 as a lattice box bridge with the carriageway below. For this purpose it was also necessary to raise the pillars with an auxiliary structure. This structure, which was released for passenger traffic on December 18, 1992 and for freight traffic again from January 11, 1993, was intended as a temporary solution with an expected life of a maximum of around five years. Contrary to the original plans, the provisional remained in service much longer. Rail traffic between Šatov and Znojmo was only stopped on June 14, 2008 in order to begin the long-planned renovation of the viaduct as part of the reconstruction of the Šatov – Znojmo line.
The Sudop company in Brno provided the designs and plans for the new bridge . The company Firesta-Fišer, re Konstrukce, stavby from Brno undertook the construction work. They rebuilt the bridge structure as a steel truss lattice bridge with an overhead carriageway based on the historical model. The new bridge is designed for a maximum line speed of 80 km / h and for line class D4 (axle load 22.5 tons, meter load 8.0 tons per meter). The higher route class now also enabled the continuous electrification of the route from Vienna to Znojmo, which was completed on October 31, 2009. From November 1, 2009, train traffic on the renewed line was temporarily started with diesel multiple units.
Since the timetable change in December 2009, continuous rail traffic between Vienna and Znojmo has been operated electrically with ÖBB vehicles.
