Customs house Porst

The customs house in Porst is a traffic structure in the city of Köthen in the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld in Saxony-Anhalt . The former toll station is under monument protection and is registered in the monument register as a monument with the registration number 094 09854.

Customs houses are usually structures at the border where goods are taxed, but since road tolls were also levied in road houses, these traffic structures are sometimes also called that. Such a road house is in Anhalt in Porst near Köthen . The small building is now at the junction of the federal road 187a to Aken from the federal road 185 , which connects Köthen with Dessau. Its design, which is strongly adapted to this junction, shows that the routing already existed in its current form back then.

Gottfried Bandhauer , at that time on his way to becoming a major architect of classicism in Anhalt-Köthen , created a simple but effective toll booth that unites three building wings on a centralized floor plan. Each of these three wings is designed like a risalit and has windows from which the respective streets of Dessau, Aken and Köthen can be overlooked. Bandhauer's most imposing central building is the Catholic Church of St. Mary of the Assumption in Köthen , a typical element of his buildings is the risalit with the recessed arch (round arch niche), which can be found in almost all buildings. There is a crown above the arched niche towards Köthen.

As early as the 1780s, a building in Porst was set up as a school and road house, but a separate road money collector was only discontinued with the new building in 1822.
