Zoltán Farkas (film editor)

Zoltán Farkas (born July 11, 1913 in Budapest ; † June 18, 1980 there ) was a Hungarian film editor who also worked as a film director at times . In a career spanning more than 40 years, Farkas has been responsible for editing more than 130 productions and has directed ten feature films. As an editor, he often worked with the director Miklós Jancsó .

life and work

After graduating from school in 1931, Zoltán Farkas began working in Hungary's largest film studio , the Hunnia Film Studio. In the musical Márciusi messe (directed by Emil Martonffi ), published in 1934, he supported the renowned editor and director István György as assistant editor . From 1935 on, Farkas himself advanced to become one of the most sought-after and busy film editors in Hungary: In 1938 a total of ten film productions in which he was involved appeared; In 1939 there were eleven. During this phase of his career, he mainly edited light comedies.

In addition, Farkas made his directorial debut with Sportszerelem in 1938 and then directed a whole series of feature films with propagandistic undertones during the Second World War . In 1942, his film Up to the fourth member (Negyedíziglen) was awarded a medal at the Venice Film Festival . After the end of the war, he only came back once more as a director, in Gerolsteini kaland (1957), a film adaptation of the operetta The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein by Jacques Offenbach .

From 1945, Zoltán Farkas suspended his career as an editor of cinema films for a decade and took part in the revival of the Mafilm Studios with other focuses. With the documentary “Bunte Welt am Großer Strom” (1957), in which three editors and eight directors from different countries were involved, he turned back to film editing. In 1963, Cantata Profana began working with Miklós Jancsó , one of the most important Hungarian directors of the 20th century. For Jancsó this was his second feature film, and he then chose Farkas as his regular editor. New films from this partnership followed annually; The most prominent are The Hopeless (1965), Stille und Schrei (1968) and Red Psalm (1972). This won the prize for best director at the Cannes Film Festival .

The last joint film with Miklós Jancsó was My Love - Elektra in 1974 . After that, until his death in 1980, Zoltán Farkas edited a few films with other directors, including the documentary The Order , a portrait of the Hungarian pentathlete András Balczó . This film was withdrawn from the program by the Ministry of Culture three weeks after its theatrical release in May 1977 because of the sometimes violent criticism that Balczó had expressed against political functionaries and the Soviet occupation of 1956 .
