Zone (Ethiopia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zones ( Amharic ዞን zonə ) form the second highest administrative level in Ethiopia below the ethnically defined regions or states.

There are around 68 zones in Ethiopia (the classifications have been changed several times, and there are different details about the names and number of zones). In contrast to the division into regions, which have extensive autonomy, the zoning is purely administrative in nature. The zones are further subdivided into woredas . So-called special woredas have a special status insofar as they are not subject to any zone. Zones and woredas are partly defined ethnically.

Before the introduction of the current administrative structure of Ethiopia in 1995, the traditional provinces in Ethiopia were divided into awrajjas .
