Systematics
Order : Beetle (Coleoptera)
Subordination : Polyphaga
Family : Weevil (Curculionidae)
Subfamily : Bark beetle (Scolytinae)
Genre : Dryocoetes
Type : Shaggy spruce bark beetle
Scientific name
Dryocoetes autographus
( Ratzeburg , 1837)

The shaggy spruce bark beetle ( Dryocoetes autographus ) is a weevil from the subfamily of the bark beetle (Scolytinae). Since it creates its breeding systems in the bark of the host trees, it is counted among the bark breeders.

features

The beetles are 3 to 4.3 millimeters long and have a dark-brown to red-brown, closely spaced hairy body. The head is not visible from above. The eyes are kidney-shaped. The throat plate is uniform curved, uniform structure, with front reibeisenartiger structure and dotted rear. Seen from above, it covers the head. The wing covers , which are provided with clear rows of dots, merge into a rounded drop. The spaces between the rows of dots are finely dotted and covered with rows of long, yellow, protruding hair. The antenna lobe is provided with two seams and flattened, the antenna whip is five-part. The third foot member is cylindrical in shape.

distribution

The species is common in Europe .

Way of life

Dryocoetes autographus occurs on spruce ( Picea ), pine ( Pinus ), more rarely on silver fir ( Abies alba ) and European larch ( Larix decidua ). The feeding picture is confused. Short, irregular, curved, spur-shaped, sometimes widened mother tunnels and tangled, winding larval tunnels ensure that no clear feeding pattern can be seen. There are one or two generations a year with flight times in May and July. The animals live monogamous .

The beetles are strongly secondary, which means that weakened or damaged host plants, as are often found after litter and break events, are almost exclusively colonized. Similar to the spruce weevil ( Hylobius abietis ) or the black pine bast beetle ( Hylastes ater ), the beetles can cause bark injuries by gnawing young forest trees . In coniferous forest plantings, these can cause economic damage (death of the young plants).
