The Zugspitzland comprises the following municipalities in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district , in the order from northeast to southwest:

local community Area

Population / km²
Ohlstadt 41.16 3299 80.2
Eschenlohe 55.04 1611 29.3

Grainau 49.39 3680 74.5
Zugspitzland 394.87 41731 105.7

The community centers are all in the Loisachtal ( upper and middle reaches ) on the road from Murnau to Ehrwald ( Bundesstrasse 2 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Bundesstrasse 23 from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Austrian border near Ehrwald, continued on the Austrian side as B 187 ).

The term Zugspitzland does not designate an administrative institution or geo-historically founded region, but rather an initiative for location marketing and regional management on the German side of the border. It was named after the Zugspitze , Germany's highest mountain in the municipality of Grainau on the border with Austria .

The tourist information offices of the communities of Farchant, Oberau and Eschenlohe have come together under the name of the Zugspitzland holiday region . In contrast, the name Zugspitz Region is used by the Zugspitz Region GmbH, based in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, for the purpose of promoting the economy and tourism in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district . The tourist region Zugspitz region of the official statistics of the Bavarian State Office for Statistics also refers to the entire district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The southern part of the Zugspitzland (communities Farchant, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Grainau) also belong to the Werdenfelser Land , which otherwise extends further east.
