He has been on the international wrestling mat since he was 16 years old. At his first start in June 2008 at the European Junior Championships (Cadets) in Daugavpils, he finished second in the weight class up to 46 kg, behind Toğrul Əsgərov from Azerbaijan, who later became Olympic champion and then a doping offender . At the 2009 European Junior Championships in Zrenjanin, Surabi Iakobishvili came in 5th in the weight class up to 54 kg.

At the Junior World Cup 2011 in Plauen, he came third in the weight class up to 60 kg behind Toğrul Əsgərov and Behnam Ehsanpour from Iran. From 2012 Surabi Iakobishvili was used by the Georgian Wrestling Association in several international tournaments with good results in the seniors. In April 2012, he took part in the Olympic qualification tournament in Sofia in the weight class up to 66 kg and came in 7th after victories over Andrei Stadnik from Ukraine and Andreas Trantafylidis from Greece and a defeat against Martin Daum from Germany.

His next start at an international championship took place in March 2015. At the U23 European Championships in Wałbrzych he came in the weight class up to 65 kg after three battles won in the final, in which he lost against Frank Chamizo Marquez from Italy and thus won the silver medal.

At the 2016 European Championships in Riga, Surabi Iakobishvili defeated George Bucur from Romania, lost to Mustafa Kaya from Turkey, won in the consolation round over David Habat from Slovakia, but was defeated in the battle for one of the bronze medals against Israil Kasjumow from Russia. He was fifth. Then he missed the Olympic qualification tournament in Zrenjanin in the weight class up to 65 kg with a 3rd place behind Magomedrasul Gadschiew from Poland and Andrei Kwiatkowski from Ukraine a starting place for the Olympic Games this year in Rio the Janeiro by just one place. However, he got this starting place at the last qualification tournament in April 2016 in Ulan Baatar. He finished here behind the Russian Adam Batirow , who started for Bahrain, in 2nd place, which entitled him to start in Rio. At the Olympic wrestling tournament in Rio de Janeiro, however, he had no luck in the weight class up to 65 kg, because he had won a fight in the 2nd round against the reigning world champion of 2015 Frank Chamizo Marquez , against whom he lost. Since Frank Chamizo Marquez surprisingly did not reach the final, he had to retire and only came in 10th place.

He defeated there in the weight class up to 65 kg Bajrang Bajran, India, Mustafa Kaya, Alan Gogajew , Russia and Magomedrasul Gadschiew, Poland and became world champion.

In 2018 he could not repeat this success. In Kaspiisk he lost in the semifinals against Magomed Kurbanalijew from Russia and won the bronze medal by defeating Andrei Kwiatkowski and in Budapest he was defeated in the semifinals against Magomedrasul Muhtarowitsch Gasimagomedow from Russia and won the medal by beating Bjambdorig Bat Erdene from Mongolia.
