Frank Chamizo Marquez (born July 10, 1992 in Matanzas , Cuba ) is an Italian wrestler of Cuban origin. In 2015 and 2017 he became world champion and in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020 also European champion in free style in the weight classes up to 65 kg, 70 kg or 74 kg body weight. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he won a bronze medal in the same weight class up to 65 kg in the same style.

Career

Frank Chamizo Márquez started wrestling as a teenager in Matanzas. He concentrated on the free style. In 2010, at the age of 18, he was Cuban champion in the weight class up to 55 kg. After this success he was accepted into the Cuban national team and used in international championships.

In April 2010 he became the Pan American champion in the weight class up to 55 kg in Monterrey / Mexico. At the Junior World Championships in Budapest in 2010 he came in the same weight class to a victory over Rasul Kaliew from Kazakhstan, but lost his next fight against Rasul Maschesow from Russia. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only reached 16th place. Two months later, in September 2010, he showed his true skills at the World Cup in Moscow. In Moscow he defeated Krasimir Krastanow from Great Britain, Sergej Ratuschnyi from Ukraine and Hassan Rahimi from Iran. In the semifinals he was defeated by Viktor Lebedew from Russia, but secured a bronze medal in the consolation round with a victory over Kim Hyo-sub from Korea .

In March 2011, Frank Chamizo represented the Cuban colors at the Team World Cup in Makhachkala / Russia. He came in the weight class up to 55 kg to victories over Gabit Tolepbay from Kazakhstan, Bessarion Gotschaschwili from Georgia and Hassan Rahimi, while he lost to Namik Sowdumzade from Azerbaijan. In September 2011 he competed at the World Cup in Istanbul. He defeated there in the weight class up to 55 kg Rahul Balasaheb Aware from India and Sarunas Jurcys from Lithuania, but then lost again to Viktor Lebedev and in the consolation round also to Mihran Jaburjan from Armenia, with which he was eliminated and only came in 12th place.

Then Frank Chamizo met the Italian wrestler Dalma Caneva. The two fell in love and soon got married. This gave Frank Chamizo Italian citizenship. He left Cuba and now started for Italy and the CS Esercito Rome club . However, since he had to accept a longer suspension from the International Wrestling Federation (FILA or UWW), he was unable to participate in international championships from 2012 to 2014. From 2013 he was allowed to start in international tournaments. He has also been wrestling in the German Bundesliga for VfK Schifferstadt since 2013 .

After this suspension he started for Italy for the first time at the U-23 European Championships in Wałbrzych / Poland in March 2015. Since he was now bigger and heavier, he started in the weight class up to 65 kg body weight and won over Randy Vock, Switzerland, Norbert Lukacs, Hungary, Maxim Perpeliță, Moldova, Magomed Muslimow, Azerbaijan and Surabi Jakobaschwili, Georgia superior style the title. In June 2015 Frank Chamizo took part in the 1st European Games in Baku. He defeated Awtandil Kentschadze, Georgia, Mustafa Kaya from Turkey and George Bucur from Romania. In the final, however, he was defeated by the 2012 Olympic champion in the weight class up to 55 kg body weight Toğrul Əsg ausrov from Azerbaijan, who, like him, had grown into the weight class up to 65 kg, on points and thus took second place.

At the World Championships in Las Vegas in September 2015, Frank Chamizo became world champion in the weight class up to 65 kg for the first time with victories over Magomedrasul Gadschijew, Poland, Kim Ju-song, North Korea, Toğrul Əsgərov, Sayed Ahmad Mohammadi , Iran and Ichtiyor Nawrusow from Uzbekistan .

In March 2016 he also won the European Championship in Riga. On the way to this success he defeated Steven Graf, Switzerland, Eduards Florows, Latvia, Semen Radulow, Ukraine, Aghahussein Mustafajew, Azerbaijan and in the final Mustafa Kaya from Turkey, against whom his victory was relatively narrow with 8: 6 points. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Frank Chamizo won the weight class up to 65 kg, initially over Devid Safarjan from Armenia and Zurab Jakobischwili from Georgia. In the semifinals he lost against Toğrul Əsgərov from Azerbaijan. Since this reached the final, Frank Chamizo was able to secure a bronze medal by defeating Frank Molinaro from the United States. Toğrul Əsgərov was convicted of doping a little later and banned from all competitions for one year until April 17, 2018.

2017 was a very successful year for Frank Chamizo, because in May of this year he became European champion in the weight class up to 70 kg in Novi Sad and in August of this year in Paris he was also world champion in the same weight class. On the way to this success he defeated Ichtiyor Nawrusow, Elaman Dogdurbek Uulu from Kyrgyzstan, Akschurek Tanatarow from Kazakhstan, Yakup Gör from Turkey and James Green from the United States in Paris .

In 2018 he was unable to build on these successes. At the European Championships this year in Kaspiisk in May, he won the weight class up to 74 kg against Avtandil Kentschadze from Georgia and Chetik Zabolow , Russia, but surprisingly lost in the semifinals against Söner Demirtas from Turkey. Then he won a bronze medal with a victory over Achsarbek Gulajew from Slovakia. At the World Championships in Budapest he even went without a medal. He won in Budapest against Gamil Jalilow from Tajikistan, Gong Byung-min, South Korea and Bolat Sakajew, Kazakhstan, then lost against Saurbek Sidakow from Russia and in the battle for a bronze medal also against Jordan Burroughs from the United States.

In April 2019, he returned to his successful track. He was again European champion in Bucharest in the weight class up to 74 kg with victories over Timur Bischojew , Russia, Miroslaw Kirow, Bulgaria, Gadschimurad Gadschiew, Azerbaijan and Selimchan Chadiev, France. At the world championship this year in Nur-Sultan he was back in the weight class up to 74 kg at the start. Since this weight class is Olympic, it was extremely well occupied both quantitatively and qualitatively. Frank Chamizo was in very good shape in Nur-Sultan and fought his way to the finals with victories over Marc Dietsche, Switzerland, Lee Seungchul, South Korea, Daniar Kaisanow, Kazakhstan and Selimchan Chadijew, France. In this he met the reigning world champion Saurbek Sidakow from Russia. The fight was perfectly balanced for a long time, until Sidakov achieved a larger score, which decided the fight in his favor.

In February 2020, Frank Chamizo started at the European Championships in Rome in the weight class up to 74 kg. After four victorious fights, he faced Magomedrasul Gazimagomedow from Russia in the final. This fight was pretty even and Frank Chamizo was leading 4: 3 points until a few seconds before the end, when the Russian managed to grab a leg of Frank Chamizo and push him off the mat. After a "challenge", the jury decided that Chamizo was only pushed off the mat a fraction of a second after the end of the fight and that Magomedrasul Gazimagomedow could therefore not receive a rating. Frank Chamizo was the lucky point winner and again European champion.
